Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has said that his country will once again take control of the Panama Canal.
Trump made this statement today in his speech at the U.S. Congress and added that his commitment to acquiring the Panama Canal remains strong. “My administration will take back the Panama Canal, and we have already begun this process.”
The U.S. President had previously stated that he would regain control of the Panama Canal, remarks that had been rejected by Panama’s leaders.
The Panama Canal, which connects the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, was opened in 1914 with the help of the U.S. The U.S. held control of the canal for many years, but in 1999, control was handed over to Panama based on a treaty.
