Members of the United Nations Security Council, during their recent meeting, condemned the entry of Israeli forces into Lebanon and the violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while reaffirming their support for Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to a report by Al Jazeera today, most Council members described Israel\u2019s actions as contrary to international law and in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The report states that a senior United Nations official called for an immediate halt to Israeli attacks on Lebanon during the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations stated that, in order to reduce tensions, Hezbollah must stop its attacks on Israel, the Lebanese government and armed forces must assume full control over the country’s territory, and Iran must cease using Lebanon as an operational base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the conclusion of the meeting, Security Council members emphasized the importance of talks scheduled to begin this week in Washington, describing them as the best path toward ending the conflict and restoring stability in Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
