Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Donald Trump on his inauguration as the new president of the United States and expressed hope that he would fulfill his promises.

In a televised speech to Russia’s National Security Council, Putin also referred to Trump’s statements about preventing a third world war and restoring relations with Russia.

The Russian president emphasized that he welcomed Trump’s stance and mentioned that the doors for discussions regarding the Ukraine conflict would be open with Trump.

He said, “His position should not be about a temporary ceasefire, but about long-term peace that ensures the legitimate interests of all the people in the region.”

Donald Trump took the oath of office as the President of the United States for the second time last night at the White House.

During his election campaign, he had stated that he would bring an end to the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.
