Reuters, quoting a Syrian army officer, has reported that the government of Bashar al-Assad, the country’s president, has ended after a lightning attack by the opposition.

According to Reuters, Bashar al-Assad’s opponents said that Damascus “is now freed from Assad.”

Assad left Damascus on Sunday for an unknown destination. His opponents said that they entered the capital without any sign of the presence of the army.
Thousands of people on foot and in cars gathered in the center of Damascus and chanted “freedom”.

The opposition said: “We celebrate with the Syrian people the news of the release of our prisoners and their release from chains and the announcement of the end of the injustice in Saydnaya prison.”
