Umerov, Ukraine’s Defense Minister and head of the negotiating delegation, announced after Friday’s talks in Istanbul that both sides had agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners each.

He stated that no specific date has been set yet for when the exchange process will take place.

This exchange is one of the few instances of direct cooperation between Russia and Ukraine.

Ukraine has called for an unconditional ceasefire starting May 12, but Russia has rejected the request.

The talks in Istanbul are ongoing with delegations from both sides present, although the Russian President has not personally attended.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called the Russian delegation “a façade,” and Western leaders have questioned President Putin’s seriousness.
