A UN-affiliated body has announced that Indian authorities last week threw dozens of Rohingya migrants from a ship into the sea.
According to a statement released Thursday by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, at least 40 migrants who had previously been detained in New Delhi were taken by Indian naval forces to the border waters between India and Myanmar and abandoned there.
These individuals included women, children, and the elderly, who managed to reach the shore using life jackets. However, their current whereabouts in Myanmar remain unknown.
The UN human rights office described this act as “unacceptable” and assigned an expert to investigate the matter.
The UN agency has called on the Indian government to refrain from “inhumane treatment” of Rohingya migrants.
