Nineteen European countries and Norway have urged the European Commission to ensure that Afghans residing illegally in Europe are returned to Afghanistan—either voluntarily or by force—even if this requires negotiations with the Afghan government. They said that since the Taliban (Islamic Emirate) took power in 2021, there has been no official repatriation agreement, which has made it impossible to deport Afghans convicted of crimes, posed a threat to European security, and weakened public trust in asylum policies.
