Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has praised the actions of Ahmad al-Sharaa, the President of Syria, following operations by the Syrian army against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
After a telephone conversation with Ahmad al-Sharaa, Trump said he is “very pleased” with developments in Syria and that the security situation in the country is progressing well.
The Syrian Democratic Forces had earlier announced that following the Syrian army’s operations, they withdrew from the cities of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor in the northeast of the country.
For years, the United States supported the Syrian Democratic Forces as its main partner in the fight against ISIS; however, U.S. officials have recently said that the group’s role as a key anti-ISIS force has largely come to an end, and that the Syrian government has assumed security responsibilities.
