Noor Ahmad Islamjar, the Governor of Herat, has requested the United Nations to prioritize Afghan domestic products when purchasing food and other necessary goods.
According to a press release from the Herat Governor’s Office, Islamjar met with Indrika Ratwatte, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, and Arafat Jamal, Head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Afghanistan.
While praising the cooperation of UN agencies, the Governor described the services provided during the first wave of returning migrants as a major success and emphasized that the local administration is fully prepared to address the needs of any new wave of returnees.
Islamjar also stressed the need for international organizations to assist in finding foreign markets for Afghan agricultural and industrial products and called for the removal of banking restrictions, facilitation of visa issuance, and provision of online services for the private sector and traders.
In conclusion, Indrika Ratwatte welcomed the Governor’s viewpoints and suggestions and assured that the UN will make efforts in the future to procure more of its required goods from Afghan domestic products and continue its cooperation with the local administration.
