United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an immediate halt to the fighting and the protection of civilians following Pakistani airstrikes on parts of Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar provinces, which reportedly killed and injured dozens of civilians.
On Monday, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, speaking on behalf of Guterres, said that all parties must uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure under all circumstances.
According to reports, at least 36 civilians were killed and more than 160 others were injured in the strikes. The victims included women, children, and elderly people who were inside a residential home at the time of the attack.
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan condemned the strikes, describing them as a “violation of Afghanistan’s airspace,” a “crime,” and a “cowardly act.”
