U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking at an event marking the start of celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the United States, said that Iran is seeking an agreement with the United States.

Speaking today (Saturday, July 4), Trump added that the United States had given Iran a one-week pause in negotiations due to the funeral ceremonies for Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to Trump, “We defeated Venezuela in one day, and we hit Iran very hard. They are extremely eager to make a deal—more eager than you can imagine.”

Following their 39-day conflict, Iran and the United States held three rounds of talks in Switzerland. Two days ago, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that both countries had agreed to resume the next round of negotiations after the funeral ceremonies for Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei’s funeral ceremonies began today and are scheduled to continue until July 9. Iran’s former Supreme Leader was killed on February 27 in a joint U.S.-Israeli strike on the country.
