Venezuelan authorities have announced that the death toll from the two powerful earthquakes that recently struck the country has risen to 2,954, while thousands more have been injured or displaced.
According to Reuters, citing Venezuelan officials, more than 12,000 people were injured, and approximately 16,000 others lost their homes as a result of the twin earthquakes.
The two earthquakes struck western Venezuela on June 24, about 160 kilometers from Caracas. The first measured 7.2 on the Richter scale, followed less than a minute later by a second, even stronger 7.5-magnitude quake.
The earthquakes caused the collapse of dozens of buildings, trapped a number of people beneath the rubble, and inflicted extensive damage on critical infrastructure.
