Reuters has reported that NATO leaders are set to announce arms deals worth tens of billions of dollars today in Ankara, the capital of Turkey.
European governments will announce these agreements at NATO’s defense industry summit, which is being held ahead of US President Donald Trump’s arrival to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and attend the NATO leaders’ summit.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that European countries have significantly increased their defense spending in recent years.
According to him, part of this increase is due to concerns over Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, while another part is linked to pressure from Trump to raise military budgets.
Rutte added that NATO’s European members and Canada spent around $90 billion more on defense in 2025 compared with 2024, bringing their total defense spending to more than $570 billion.
Donald Trump has repeatedly accused European NATO members of relying too heavily on the United States for their defense. He has called on Washington’s allies to increase their financial contributions to the military alliance.
