Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced that two oil tankers exploded in the Strait of Hormuz in the south of the country and were forced to stop moving.
In a statement issued today (Monday, 20 July), the IRGC said that the oil tankers exploded late last night. According to the IRGC, the two vessels were attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz under provocation from the United States.
Iran has stated that the Strait of Hormuz is not safe for the transportation of goods and that the waterway will remain unsafe as long as the United States continues its military operations in the region.
Shipping through the strait, which is a route for the passage of around 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas supplies, has faced disruptions following the start of US and Israeli attacks on Iran on 28 February.
