According to the Associated Press, widespread wildfires in France and Spain have forced nearly 200,000 people to evacuate their homes.
French authorities on Saturday ordered the evacuation of several areas around the city of Bordeaux as advancing flames threatened nearby communities. According to France’s Interior Ministry, approximately 141,000 people have been displaced from their homes in the Gironde and Landes regions.
In Spain, the Interior Ministry said around 60,000 people have also been evacuated from central parts of the country due to rapidly spreading wildfires.
Reports indicate that the speed and intensity of the fires have surprised firefighters and emergency officials in both countries. Extreme heat and the long-term effects of climate change are considered among the main factors contributing to the severity of the wildfires.
