The U.S. Senate has approved a bill to tighten economic sanctions on Russia and reduce the country’s energy revenues amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Al Jazeera reported today that the bill, titled the “Lindsey O. Graham Sanctions on Russia and Iran Act of 2026,” would give the U.S. president the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on goods from major buyers of Russian oil and gas.
The bill also targets Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” which is used to circumvent Western sanctions.
The U.S. Senate passed the bill by a vote of 86 to 11. It will now be sent to the U.S. House of Representatives for consideration and a vote.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the Senate’s approval of the bill, saying that imposing “real and powerful” U.S. pressure and sanctions on Russia could help bring the war to an end.
