Nepalese authorities have announced that the death toll from floods in the country has surpassed 900.
Al Jazeera reported today that rescue operations are underway for more than 900 workers believed to be trapped underground at hydropower projects.
Nepalese officials said rescue efforts are focused on reaching workers trapped inside around 12 tunnels at hydropower projects that have been blocked by mud, rocks and other debris.
According to figures from Nepal’s Disaster Management Authority, unprecedented rainfall and flooding that occurred last Wednesday along the Nepal-Tibet border following a glacier collapse have so far killed 903 people and left 4,247 others missing in Nepal.
The floods have also caused extensive damage on the other side of the border, in China’s Tibet region. According to Chinese officials, at least 16 people have been killed and 546 others remain missing.
