China has called on the United States to halt the expansion of military activities in space and take steps to maintain global strategic stability.
Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the call after US Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink announced the deployment of “space-control weapons” into Earth’s orbit.
Meink said the equipment had been deployed to defend US forces against potential threats in space. However, US officials have not yet specified the type of weapons involved.
China has also urged the United States to prevent space from becoming an arena for conflict and an arms race.
