Germany’s special representative for migration agreements, Joachim Stamp, has warned refugees living in Germany to refrain from traveling to their home country for leave because it would jeopardize their right to stay in Germany.
“Germany should remain open to the world, but not stupid,” Stamp told German newspaper Bild. “The authorities must ensure that people who have applied for protection here but then go to their home country to take leave immediately lose their protected status and can no longer stay in Germany.”
Andi Grote, a senator from Hamburg, also told DPA news agency that refugees who travel to a country where they claim to be victims of persecution question their status.
Meanwhile, Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees has noted that immigrants can travel to their country only in special cases such as serious illness or the death of close relatives.
