Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, says that cluster munitions indiscriminately target civilians and that the consequences of using these weapons can affect human lives and communities for generations.

Guterres wrote today (Monday, September 14) on his X account that countries should strengthen their political commitments and allocate more resources to clearing areas contaminated by cluster munitions and supporting victims of these weapons.

He called on countries to take decisive action to build a safer future.

Cluster munitions are explosive weapons that, after an initial explosion, disperse large numbers of smaller submunitions over an area. They are produced in the form of cluster bombs, artillery shells, and missile warheads, and are used to target various types of objectives.
