The World Bank says nearly half of the people in the “Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan” region who live on less than three US dollars a day are residing in Pakistan.

According to the World Bank’s latest economic report, released on Tuesday, 48 percent of the population in the region whose daily income is less than three dollars live in Pakistan.

The report says Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen together account for another 47 percent of the region’s population living on less than three dollars a day.

The World Bank said poverty and low income levels remain major economic challenges in several countries across the region, with millions of people living on very low incomes.

In its report, the international financial institution examined the economic conditions of countries in the region and identified income levels and poverty as important indicators for assessing people’s economic and living conditions.
