The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in Texas has called for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the death of an Afghan refugee while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody.
According to reports, Nazir Paktiawal, an Afghan refugee, was detained outside his home by ICE officers on March 13 and died the following day, March 14, while in custody.
He is said to have been arrested after dropping his children off at school and reportedly faced serious health issues in the detention facility that night. The next day, authorities informed his family of his death.
Sources state that Paktiawal had previously served alongside U.S. special military forces in Afghanistan and was relocated to the United States as a refugee following the events of 2021 and the return of the Islamic Emirate to power. He was a father of several children and a recognized member of the Afghan community in Dallas.
Officials from the legal organization stressed that deaths in government custody must be investigated independently to prevent similar incidents in the future. They also urged U.S. lawmakers to establish independent oversight of migrant detention centers and to provide clear answers regarding the cause of this Afghan refugee’s death.
