The casualties suffered by the Israeli army in southern Lebanon indicate a significant shift in ground combat dynamics. The battle strategy has evolved from cautious advances supported by heavy fire to engagements in more complex terrain, giving Hezbollah greater room to maneuver and rely on ambush and close-quarters tactics.

Hassan Jouni, a retired Lebanese soldier and military analyst, told Al Jazeera that the deaths of four Israeli soldiers are a natural consequence of the army’s efforts to expand its influence in Lebanese territory.

Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that the total number of Israeli soldiers killed on the Lebanon front since the start of the war has reached ten. According to Jouni, in the early stages, the Israeli army advanced slowly, using heavy fire to destroy villages before entering open areas to reduce the risk of direct engagement. However, in recent days, as operations penetrated deeper into Lebanese territory, the army entered more complex areas, particularly in the eastern sector near the Litani River and the Al-Hujair Valley.

Jouni added: “This shift has given Hezbollah the opportunity to exploit the geography, focusing on close engagements and ambushes. It is likely that the operation in which Israeli forces were killed employed these tactics.”

He explained that evidence shows Hezbollah maintains control over the battlefield by closely monitoring Israeli movements, similar to tactics previously used in Gaza, where Palestinian resistance fighters would strike first after identifying enemy positions, then target escape routes.

Regarding the consequences of these casualties, Jouni noted: “Human factors are a sensitive point in Israel’s calculations, and the public remembers the costs of incursions into southern Lebanon. This increases pressure on Israel’s political and military leadership.”

According to Channel 12 in Israel, the soldiers were killed during close engagements with Hezbollah forces. The Israeli army is trying to expand its ground influence in Lebanon, while reports indicate a rising possibility of a U.S.-Israel ground confrontation with Iran. Analysts, however, warn that opening a ground front could be costly and highly dangerous.
