Afghanistan is facing serious challenges in the water and environmental sectors due to increasing pressures caused by climate change and displacement.

Drought, water shortages, and floods are among the major problems in the country whose impacts have been intensified by climate change. This situation has placed direct pressure on water resources, agriculture, the environment, and people’s livelihoods.

Meanwhile, with the increasing return of refugees to the country, the demand for water and other basic services has also increased. In particular, areas used for the settlement of returnees are facing additional pressure on water resources and the environment.

According to United Nations data, Afghanistan is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change and requires comprehensive measures in the areas of water resource management, preparedness for droughts and floods, and environmental protection.

To reduce the negative impacts of climate change, protecting water resources, strengthening water management, and supporting vulnerable communities are considered essential.
