The restoration and renovation of the park at the Great Mosque of Herat has officially begun under the support of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), with the participation of Herat Governor Noor Ahmad Islamjar and Turkish Ambassador to Afghanistan Cenk Ünal.

According to Afghan News, Governor Islamjar said at the inauguration ceremony that the renovation of the Great Mosque park is “an important necessity for beautifying this historic and sacred site.”

Meanwhile, the Turkish Ambassador stressed that his country will continue its cultural, academic, and historical restoration cooperation in Afghanistan.

Arafat Deniz, head of TİKA’s office in Afghanistan, announced that the project aims to beautify the surroundings of the Great Mosque, create green space, and provide a proper area for public relaxation. The work is expected to be completed within three months.

According to him, the project will include new stone paving, installation of lighting, establishment of green areas, and the planting of decorative trees and flowers.

Officials from Herat’s Directorate of Information and Culture stated that the park will cover an area of 9,400 square meters.

Maulvi Ahmadullah Muttaqi, head of Herat’s Information and Culture Department, praised TİKA’s cooperation, noting that such projects can play a vital role in promoting tourism and showcasing Herat’s culture and heritage.

This initiative is being carried out under a memorandum of understanding between TİKA and the Herat Directorate of Information and Culture. Upon completion, the park is expected to become one of Herat’s key cultural and tourist attractions surrounding the Great Mosque.
